Director's Message
Welcome to College for Kids, A Summer Exploration, Inc. 2010! 2010 will mark the 22nd year of College for Kids, Inc. and we will once again be housed on the campus of William Woods University. The College for Kids staff is delighted William Woods University has opened its doors to us in providing a beautiful and safe environment.
CK classes address contemporary issues and problems using a higher level of integrative, analytical, and critical thinking. Class curriculum encourages awareness of and respect for divergence in thought among academic peers. The CK experience also allows students to explore different academic content and methodologies in various disciplines.
2010 brings exciting classes and activities to College for Kids. Remember when filling out the class selection of the application select BOTH morning and afternoon classes indicating your top FOUR choices for EACH using one through four (one as your first choice, four as your last choice).
College for Kids, Inc. also addresses the physical needs of gifted students today. Everyday CK takes time for physical exercise in classes and during recreation time. Exercise and physical fitness are necessary to fully realize one’s potential. Please be sure to bring comfortable, loose fitting clothing, tennis shoes that lace and SOCKS!
The booklet contains all the information you need to enroll in College for Kids 2010. If you have any questions or need additional forms (you have CK’s permission to copy any part of the booklet for enrollment purposes), write, call or FAX your inquiries. Please remember it is important to get your application in early, classes and dormitory facilities often fill quickly. Early registration can also save you money.
Be sure to read this entire booklet and keep it as a reference as you prepare for camp. Please note the changes in this year’s health form. Please sign it in all the designated places both front and back.
The College for Kids staff and I look forward to a unique and challenging experience this summer as we join together under the Big Top for a week of learning and growing!

The College for Kids Experience
Academics are certainly an important focus of every College for Kids day. Dedicated instructors and career experts reserve a week or two each summer to share their passionate interests. This combination makes for the ideal learning environment - enticing curriculum, teachers with ingenuity and excited students.
CK offers major course choices for 3 hours each morning and 2 hour minor courses of study each afternoon. Students have opportunities to sample weeklong, intensive, cognitive-oriented studies such as biology, chemistry, classical studies, psychology, rockets and historical mysteries. Classes such as American Sign Language, Adobe Photoshop, and CK News give students the opportunity to learn new skills. Introductory exploration courses, such as fine arts, acting, volunteering and fitness help meet the affective needs of gifted students through self-expression and communication dynamics. CK continues to foster favorite traditions. Evening activities include off-campus field trips, speakers, and socializing.
This attitude is continued through the residential life component of the summer program. Residential advisors live in the halls with students. CK RAs, who attend college in various states during the school year, bring enthusiasm and unique experiences to CK. We hope they become your friends and mentors. Professional adult teachers including Marilyn Toalson, Sue Craghead, Anna Opie, Erin Craghead, Whitney Craghead, and Austin Reed also live in the residential halls during CK.
Be sure to pack your most comfortable walking shoes that tie, socks, and loose clothing for vigorous physical activity! Leave your electronic games and equipment at home because your free time is action packed. Be sure to bring a good book for reading at bedtime. If you have a talent, come prepared to perform in the talent show.
College for Kids is often a haven for gifted students who find there are others just like them, who value a love for learning, enjoy being challenged at school and have passionate interests. Our teachers make the curriculum opportunities possible and the CK atmosphere makes it work. The College for Kids’ goal is to provide a summer experience that will be long remembered.
See you there!
