Director's Message
Welcome to College for Kids, A Summer Exploration, Inc. 2008! College for Kids will operate their nineteenth year on the campus of William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri. William Woods University distinguishes itself as a student-centered and professions-oriented university committed to the values of ethics, self-liberation, and lifelong education of students in the world community. The vision of William Woods University is to be recognized as a progressive and growing leader in higher education, fiscally healthy, and achieving quality in all aspects of institutional life, while cultivating highly respected, innovative, and unique programs. The College for Kids staff is delighted William Woods University has opened its doors to us in providing a beautiful and safe environment.
2008 brings exciting classes and activities to College for Kids. Use the handy NEW checklist (inside the front cover) to refer to when registering. Remember when filling out the class selection of the application, select both morning and afternoon classes: indicating your top four choices for each using one through four (one as your first choice, four as your last choice). CK classes address contemporary issues and problems using a higher level of integrative, analytical, and critical thinking. Class curriculum encourages awareness of and respect for divergence in thought among academic peers. The CK experience also allows students to explore different academic content and methodologies in various disciplines.
College for Kids also addresses the physical needs of all students today. Everyday CK takes time for physical exercise, in various classes and during Recreation time. Exercise and physical fitness are necessary to fully realize one's potential. Please be sure to bring comfortable, loose fitting clothing, tennis shoes that lace and SOCKS!
This Web site contains all the information you need to enroll in College for Kids 2008. If you have any questions write, call or e-mail your inquiries. Please remember it is important to get your application in early, classes and dormitory facilities often fill quickly. Early registration can also save you money.
Please be sure to read all of the information. The College for Kids staff and I look forward to a unique and challenging experience this summer as we join together as friends for a week of learning and growing.

The College for Kids Experience
Academics are an important focus of every College for Kids day. Dedicated instructors and career experts reserve a week or two each summer to share their passionate interests. This combination makes for the ideal learning environment - enticing curriculum, teachers with ingenuity and excited students.
CK offers major course choices for 3 hours each morning and 2 hour minor courses of study each afternoon. Students have opportunities to sample weeklong, intensive, cognitive-oriented studies. Classes such as American Sign Language, PowerPoint and Photoshop give students the opportunity to learn new skills. Introductory exploration courses, such as fine arts, poetry, acting, and fitness help meet the affective needs of gifted students through self-expression and communication dynamics.
This attitude is continued through the residential life component of the summer program. Residential advisors live in the halls with students. Some RAs are teachers of gifted. Others are gifted students themselves. We have RAs who attend college in various states. Each RA brings enthusiasm and unique experiences to CK. We hope they become your friends and mentors. Marilyn Toalson, Sue Craghead and Stephanie Crooks also live in the residential halls during CK.
CK continues to foster the favorite traditions. Evening activities include off-campus field trips, speakers, and socializing. Be sure to pack your most comfortable walking shoes that tie, socks, and loose clothing for vigorous physical activity! Leave your electronic games and equipment home because your free time is action packed. Be sure to bring a good book for reading at bedtime. If you have a talent, come prepared to share in the talent show.
This year's CK Challenge takes us to the Renaissance where you have the opportunity to learn about this fascinating time. Bring something creative to transform your spirit when attending the Renaissance events. (NO WEAPONS PLEASE). College for Kids is often a haven for students who find there are others just like them, who value a love for learning, being challenged at school and having passionate interests. Our teachers make the curriculum opportunities possible and the CK atmosphere makes it work. The goal at College for Kids is to provide a summer challenge that you will long remember.
See you there!
