2008 Class Descriptions
ASL - American Sign Language
(Session III: Afternoons)
Learn basic American Sign Language to hold conversations without words. Experience life as a deaf person in a hearing world---learn enough to make you dangerous. Decipher clues with your new knowledge of ASL to discover the hidden treasure. This is a weeklong visit into the World of Deafness.

Adobe Photoshop
(Sessions II and III: Mornings)
Learn the basics of Adobe Photoshop---the computer program that allows you to create and alter graphics and photographs to suit your needs. Fix flaws, add or subtract objects, draw on photos, change colors of objects, and stretch or shrink objects to name a few! This program allows you to create "perfect" pictures! Spend the week learning how to do magic with Photoshop!

Broadway to Hollywood
(Sessions I, II and III: Mornings)
Come sing and dance in a showcase of the greatest hits of the stage and screen. Bring your favorite song from a Broadway musical or Hollywood film (including Disney) to polish, and learn a group production number for the closing ceremony!

The Chemistry of Fire
(Session III: Afternoons)
Explore the colorful, loud, fun and sometimes explosive side of chemistry. New experiments are planned each day. Use chemistry to create and explain color changes, huge bubbles, weird smells and effusions of gas! Learn why chemistry works the way it does and how to safely perform chemistry experiments. Due to the nature of this class there will be an emphasis on safety. NO horseplay allowed.

Chinese Art
(Session III: Afternoons)
Chinese painting is more than simply a style. Paint animals and landscapes. Practice the strokes to do calligraphy. Experiment with a variety of art mediums including watercolors, pen and ink, and charcoal. Learn the rituals and techniques that are an integral part of this stylish art form.

CK News
(Sessions I, II and III: Afternoons)
Calling all reporters, editors and publishers! CK News has immediate openings in all areas. Qualified applicants are responsible for researching, writing and editing stories for a daily newsletter. Be prepared to meet deadlines and produce at least one news story per day. If you have the required qualifications, sign up for this class immediately. The pay is minimal, but the rewards are great!

DIG It! Archeology and Anthropology
(Session III: Mornings)
Become an archeologist! Explore basic archeology and forensic archeology. Study important archeological sites and anthropology themes through hands on activities. Apply your knowledge to create your own civilization complete with cultural artifacts. Hands on activities make this is a class you can really dig!

Exploring Memory
(Sessions II and III: Mornings)
Do we really store everything that has ever happened to us in our memory? What's the best way for you to memorize lists, new words, dates and names? Why do we so often remember something differently than our parents, siblings and friends? How does our brain make memories? What happens when memory fails? Explore the fascinating topic of memory. Examine your own memory skills, learn techniques for improving memory, play memory games, and examine both the biological and philosophical perspectives on memory.

Fun and Games

As Sir Arthur Conan Doyle once said, "The game is afoot." Explore different types of games; board games, card games, interactive games and more. Design an original game and make a prototype for display. Bring your favorite games to class and may demonstrate how to play their games.

Geometry for Taxicabs, Crows, Airline Pilots and Politicians
(Session III: Afternoons)
Join this mathematical look at geography and other graphing tricks. How did ships determine their locations at sea during WWII? What do circles look like to a taxicab driver? Have fun exploring algebra and geometry as you've never seen it before!

Ingenious Inventions
(Session II and III: Mornings)
Bring ideas, common sense, imagination and a willingness to try! From the light bulb to the hover scooter, creative minds solve common problems and make life fun! Keep your hands busy and your mind active as you "create" your ideas in class. Develop a marketing strategy for your invention and "sell" your ideas to CK.

Mind Games
(Sessions II and III: Afternoons)
Can you spot a traitor in your midst? Have a knack for brain teasers? Ever wonder what would happen if you changed the past? Mind Games is a class in which you will be kept active both mentally and physically. In Werewolf, learn to read body language, to listen to your instincts and to talk to your neighbors to gather information. Fluxx is a card game with one set of rules, any of which can change depending on the cards played. Mind Trap demands quick, but sound reasoning and "thinking outside the box." Chrononaughts allows you to change the past in order to fulfill your mission. Explore the strategies you need to master these and other mind games!

Native American Basket and Bead
(Session III: Mornings)
Experience the art of basket and bead weaving in the way of the Native Americans. This craft is still practiced by some Indian tribes. The skills of weaving baskets and beads are passed down from generation to generation and displayed at pow-wows and stomp dances across the country. Learn about the customs of native American tribes while working on these unique crafts. Gain a better understanding of a dying culture.

Operation Anyone?
(Session III: Mornings)
Learn how the human body works. Examine how the stomach breaks down food. Find out how your eye processes color and how your brain "sees" things differently from your eyes. Investigate body systems and how they work together. Tour the body, one organ system at a time. Learn the art of dissection while learning interesting facts about the body and how it works.

The Power of Myth and Legend

Myths and legends from various cultures continue to fascinate us even though we have abandoned the religious beliefs of our ancestors. Study the myths and religions of several lands. Learn about the Norse and Celtic myths, the ancient Greco-Roman religions, and others.

Rocket Science

Learn about the fantastic explorations of outer space. Create and launch your own rocket, record data, and calculate altitude of each flight. Combine your artistic engineering, and mathematical talents to accomplish lift-off.

Time Frames: Creating The Graphic Novel

Discover the chain of events leading to our "Golden Age of Illustration," from the newspaper cartoonists of the 1890's to today's Asian artists. Then use the processes of current designers to write and draw your own graphic novel (the current term for comic books).

Top Secret: Spy Science
(Sessions I, II and III: Afternoons)
Giacomo Cassanova, Mata Hari, James Bond-real spies or fictional characters? Learn about some of the world's most interesting secret organizations and spies. Take part in activities that teach you tricks of the spy trade such as creating disguises, using codes and tracking. Guest speakers and lots of outdoor activities make this course TOP SECRET.

Who Was King Arthur?
(Session III: Afternoons)
The ancient Celts created the most widespread (and some would say most beautiful) culture of the ancient world, yet they have been nearly wiped out by their conquerors. Who were/are they? How did the legend of Arthur, king of Britain, originate? What can we learn from archaeology, legends, art and music? Study this fascinating king and his kingdom.
