Ancient Empires

(Session II: Mornings)

Why build an empire? What advantages did gathering large territories under one government have for ancient peoples? Explore the early empires of the Egyptians, Persians, Greeks and Romans. Uncover modern parallels, through film, slides, stories and discussion.

Adobe Photoshop

(Sessions II and III: Mornings)

Learn the basics of Adobe Photoshop---the computer program that allows you to create and alter graphics and photographs to suit your needs. Fix flaws, add or subtract objects, draw on photos, change colors of objects, and stretch or shrink objects to name a few! This program allows you to create "perfect" pictures! Spend the week learning how to do magic with Photoshop!

Animated Storybook

(Sessions I and II: Afternoons)

Animate your favorite childhood picture book with the amazing tools of Microsoft PowerPoint. In this class you can put your creativity on display, along with your computer skills to create a new version of a classic story that you love. Get ready to wow your family and friends with your newfound PowerPoint skills. Please note: Students need basic word processing skills prior to this class.

Bring: Three of your favorite picture books.

Bridge Building

Like a good contest? Want to pit your math and building skills against the best of CK? Check out bridges around the world, then use the knowledge to build the best bridge out there!! Make your bridge the strongest, and manage your money the best! Daily and overall "Bridge Building Champ" to be determined!

Broadway to Hollywood

(Sessions I, II and III: Mornings)

Come sing and dance in a showcase of the greatest hits of the stage and screen. Bring your favorite song from a Broadway musical or Hollywood film (including Disney) to polish, and learn a group production number for the closing ceremony!

Calling all Mathemagicians!

(Session II: Mornings)

Bring your best math thinking cap as we play with mysterious math problems, magic squares, even magic paper! Learn how to dazzle your friends, fool your parents and even stump your teachers. All it takes is a little time, a little thinking, and we'll use algebra to do it!

Castles, Crusades, Death and Darkness: Life in the Middle Ages

(Sessions I and II: Mornings)

How miserable were the Middle Ages? What is the Black Death? Why is it called the Dark Ages? Through hands on activities, explore art, architecture, food, weaponry, medicine, feudalism and more to answer these and other questions! Live a life in the day and see if you would have survived the Middle Ages.

Cats and Hats, Holes and Hoots, Maybe Harry Two!

(Sessions II: Afternoons)

Love books made into movies? Hate them? Investigate why books and movies of the same title often aren't the same story! Using popular book/movie duos, look at how/why the story changes! Be prepared to discuss your favorite parts of the book, re-watch clips from the movies, and get the chance to film your own movie version of a favorite book! (Watch for the book list before camp - READ at least one book before camp)

Chocolate - Chocolate - Chocolate

(Sessions I and II: Mornings)

If you love chocolate this is the class for you. Here is your chance to learn while enjoying the wonderful tastes of chocolate. Explore the history of chocolate and examine how chocolate is produced. Become a chocolate connoisseur as you judge different types of chocolate and rank your favorites. Create chocolate products that require sampling!

CK News

(Sessions I, II and III: Afternoons)

Calling all reporters, editors and publishers! CK News has immediate openings in all areas. Qualified applicants are responsible for researching, writing and editing stories for a daily newsletter. Be prepared to meet deadlines and produce at least one news story per day. If you have the required qualifications, sign up for this class immediately. The pay is minimal, but the rewards are great!

Egypt-o-mania: Mummies, Magic and Monoliths

(Session I and II: Afternoons)

Ancient Egypt was already thousands of years old when Alexander the Great added it to his empire in 331 B.C. Learn about the Egyptian ways of life and death. What were the beliefs of these fascinating early people? Explore this fascinating culture through stories, film, slides, and hands-on artwork.

Exploring Memory

(Sessions II and III: Mornings)

Do we really store everything that has ever happened to us in our memory? What's the best way for you to memorize lists, new words, dates and names? Why do we so often remember something differently than our parents, siblings and friends? How does our brain make memories? What happens when memory fails? Explore the fascinating topic of memory. Examine your own memory skills, learn techniques for improving memory, play memory games, and examine both the biological and philosophical perspectives on memory.

Fit for Life!

(Sessions I and II: Afternoons)

Develop and maintain lifelong health as we explore various aspects of physical fitness. Bike, walk, and jog your way to total fitness. Play classic games like kickball and wiffleball along with learning new games like frisbee golf and ultimate frisbee. Come prepared to work both your mind and body!

Fun and Games

As Sir Arthur Conan Doyle once said, "The game is afoot." Explore different types of games; board games, card games, interactive games and more. Design an original game and make a prototype for display. Bring your favorite games to class and may demonstrate how to play their games.

Grossology: Survivor Challenge

(Session II: Afternoons)

Help prepare "finger foods" like grasshopper guts and smashed frogs. Then see who is the "survivor" among us as we challenge the camp directors to join us for a "snack"! Not for the weak stomached.

Ingenious Inventions

(Session II and III: Mornings)

Bring ideas, common sense, imagination and a willingness to try! From the light bulb to the hover scooter, creative minds solve common problems and make life fun! Keep your hands busy and your mind active as you "create" your ideas in class. Develop a marketing strategy for your invention and "sell" your ideas to CK.

Mind Games

(Sessions II and III: Afternoons)

Can you spot a traitor in your midst? Have a knack for brain teasers? Ever wonder what would happen if you changed the past? Mind Games is a class in which you will be kept active both mentally and physically. In Werewolf, learn to read body language, to listen to your instincts and to talk to your neighbors to gather information. Fluxx is a card game with one set of rules, any of which can change depending on the cards played. Mind Trap demands quick, but sound reasoning and "thinking outside the box." Chrononaughts allows you to change the past in order to fulfill your mission. Explore the strategies you need to master these and other mind games!

Mystery Mayhem

Super sleuths have the opportunity to solve a "Mystery" using logical thinking skills and deductive reasoning. Spend the week following and untangling the clues. Watch a mystery movie. Learn what real detectives do and finally follow the clues to find the mystery treasure. WANTED: individuals who love a good mystery!

Pay It Forward

(Sessions I and II: Mornings)

Want to help make the world a better place to live? Learn and practice the concept of "Pay It Forward." Together, through community service, we hope to lay the groundwork for a volunteer spirit during camp and beyond!! Bring a positive attitude and a willingness to help others.

Razzle Dazzle, Heavy Duty Math and other Mathemagic Tricks

(Session II: Afternoons, Session III: Mornings)

Have you ever seen paper that has only one side and one edge? Algebra hiding in card tricks? In this class, look at algebra and geometry through a magician's eyes. Join the mathemagic show and learn to do these same tricks yourself. You'll dazzle your friends and family!

Rocket Science

Learn about the fantastic explorations of outer space. Create and launch your own rocket, record data, and calculate altitude of each flight. Combine your artistic engineering, and mathematical talents to accomplish lift-off.

Time Frames: Creating The Graphic Novel

(Sessions I, II and III: Afternoons)

Discover the chain of events leading to our "Golden Age of Illustration," from the newspaper cartoonists of the 1890's to today's Asian artists. Then use the processes of current designers to write and draw your own graphic novel (the current term for comic books).

Top Secret: Spy Science

(Sessions I, II and III: Afternoons)

Giacomo Cassanova, Mata Hari, James Bond-real spies or fictional characters? Learn about some of the world's most interesting secret organizations and spies. Take part in activities that teach you tricks of the spy trade such as creating disguises, using codes and tracking. Guest speakers and lots of outdoor activities make this course TOP SECRET.

When the Whole World Was at War

(Sessions I and II: Mornings)

Are you a history buff? Did your grandparents or great-grandparents live through World War II? Join us as we travel back in time to examine this profound period in history. Examine the risks, the "what ifs", and the major world leaders - Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Stalin, Hitler, and Mussolini. Visit the incredible Churchill memorial in Fulton and uncover what made him one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century. Finally, take part in the "Ultimate WWII Challenge Course" where you trace the steps of the Allies alongside your brave classmates.
